Descale your garment steamer? How to prevent and remove limescale
Has your garment steamer suddenly started producing less steam, sputtering, or barely releasing any steam? Limescale may be a possible cause. However, STEAMRS garment steamers generally do not need to be descaled periodically.
The interior of our handheld garment steamers has a special coating that helps prevent limescale and mineral residue from building up. The best way to prevent limescale problems is therefore not to descale regularly, but to use the right water from the start.
Have you been using hard, limescale-rich tap water for a while, and has your garment steamer suddenly stopped working as usual? In this guide, we explain what to check first and how to carefully descale your garment steamer if you suspect a limescale blockage.
STEAMRS handheld garment steamers have a special coating that helps protect against limescale and mineral deposits.
Do you live in an area with hard water? If so, preferably use low-limescale, filtered, distilled, or deionized water.
First, check some common causes. If you suspect a limescale blockage, you can then carefully descale the steamer.
How does limescale form in a garment steamer?
Water naturally contains minerals, including calcium and magnesium. When water is heated and turned into steam in a garment steamer, small amounts of these minerals can remain inside the appliance.
How much limescale can form depends largely on the quality and hardness of the water. In areas with hard, limescale-rich water, tap water contains more minerals than in areas with soft water.
The interior of our STEAMRS handheld garment steamers has a special coating that helps prevent these deposits from building up. As a result, periodic descaling is not necessary with normal use.
Prevention is better than descaling
The most important way to protect your garment steamer from limescale is to use suitable water, especially if you live in an area with hard or very high-limescale tap water.
What water should you use in a garment steamer?
The cleaner and lower in limescale the water is, the fewer minerals can remain in the heating element.
Recommended
- Distilled water
- Deionized water
- Suitable filtered water
Also suitable
Do you live in an area with soft, low-limescale water? Then you can use regular tap water.
Is the tap water in your area hard or high in limescale? In that case, choose one of the recommended options instead.
Do not use
- Scented ironing water
- Laundry perfume
- Essential oil
- Cleaning products
- Liquids other than water
Unsure about the hardness of your tap water? For your garment steamer, we recommend using distilled, deionized, or suitably filtered water. This limits the amount of minerals that can enter the appliance.
My garment steamer is producing less steam or no steam. Is it limescale?
Not necessarily. If a garment steamer suddenly produces less steam or no steam, limescale may not be the cause.
Before descaling, we recommend checking the following points first.
Check the water tank
Check that there is enough water in the tank and that the rubber seal is closed properly.
Check that the tank is securely in place
Securely reinsert the water tank into the garment steamer. There should be no noticeable gap between the tank and the steamer housing.
Let the garment steamer heat up fully
Turn on the garment steamer and wait until the indicator light shows that the appliance is ready to use. Don’t press the steam button immediately after switching it on.
Check the power supply
Check that the plug is fully inserted into the socket. If necessary, try another socket to rule out a power supply issue.
Try to get the steam flowing again
Is the steamer fully heated? Then hold down the steam button for a few seconds to check whether the steam flow starts again.
When might descaling be necessary?
Have you checked the steps above, was your garment steamer working normally before, and have you been using hard, mineral-rich tap water for an extended period? Mineral deposits may be obstructing the water or steam flow.
In that case, you can try a mild descaling treatment with diluted white vinegar.
A STEAMRS garment steamer does not need to be descaled preventively or on a fixed schedule. So don’t use this treatment as part of your regular maintenance routine.
How do you descale a garment steamer with white vinegar?
For this method, use only regular white vinegar, not concentrated cleaning vinegar. We deliberately use a mild dilution.
Mix 1 part white vinegar with 3 parts water (25% / 75%). Make only enough to fill the reservoir.
Make a mild solution
Mix 1 part white vinegar with 3 parts clean water. Do not use pure vinegar or concentrated cleaning vinegar.
Fill the water reservoir
Fill the reservoir with the diluted solution and place it back in the garment steamer, making sure it is fully inserted.
Let the garment steamer heat up
Turn on the steamer and wait until it has fully heated up.
Let the solution steam through gently
Hold the garment steamer over a sink and let it steam gently. When descaling, never direct the steam at clothes, furniture, or other textiles.
Small mineral or limescale particles may come out of the steam vents during this process. You may also smell vinegar temporarily.
Empty the reservoir
Turn off the garment steamer, unplug it, and let it cool down. Then remove any remaining vinegar solution from the reservoir.
Rinse with clean water
Refill the reservoir, this time with clean water only. Let the garment steamer heat up fully again, then steam over the sink to flush out any remaining vinegar and mineral residue.
Repeat the rinse if needed
Can you still clearly smell vinegar, or are residue particles still coming out of the steam vents? If so, repeat only the rinse with clean water.
Only use the garment steamer on clothes again once it produces clean, even steam.
Never use pure white vinegar, concentrated cleaning vinegar, citric acid, baking soda, or other descaling or cleaning products in your STEAMRS garment steamer.
Still little or no steam?
If your garment steamer still produces little or no steam after the checks above and the gentle descaling treatment, don't repeat the vinegar treatment endlessly.
There may be another technical cause. If so, contact STEAMRS customer service. We’d be happy to help you find out what’s going on.
If possible, include your order number and a short video showing what the garment steamer is doing when you contact us. That way, we can help you faster.
The right water.
Good maintenance.
Steam for longer.
Good maintenance doesn't have to be complicated. Use the right water, keep your garment steamer clean, and only take action when you notice a change in performance.
This way, you can take good care of not only your clothes, but also the garment steamer you use to care for them.
Discover our garment steamersFrequently asked questions about descaling a garment steamer
Do I need to descale my STEAMRS clothes steamer?
Usually not. Our handheld clothes steamers have a special coating on the inside that helps prevent limescale and mineral deposits from building up. We recommend using suitable low-limescale water and only descaling if you suspect an actual limescale blockage.
Can I descale my clothes steamer with vinegar?
If you suspect a limescale blockage, you can use a mild solution of white vinegar and water. For STEAMRS, we recommend 1 part white vinegar to 3 parts water. Do not use undiluted vinegar or concentrated cleaning vinegar, and always rinse the appliance thoroughly with clean water afterward.
How can I tell if my clothes steamer has limescale buildup?
A sudden reduction in steam output or irregular steam may be a sign, especially if you have used hard, limescale-rich tap water for a long time. However, first check the water tank, connection, power supply, and heating, as reduced steam can also have other causes.
What water should I use in my clothes steamer?
If your tap water is hard, we recommend using distilled, deionized, or suitably filtered water. Tap water can be used in areas with soft, low-limescale water.
Can I use regular tap water in my clothes steamer?
Yes, especially if the tap water in your area is soft and low in limescale. If you live in an area with hard water, we recommend a lower-limescale alternative to help minimize mineral buildup.
Can I use cleaning vinegar to descale my clothes steamer?
No. Do not use concentrated cleaning vinegar. If you use the descaling method in this guide because you suspect a limescale blockage, use regular white vinegar diluted with water.
Can I put perfume or essential oil in my clothes steamer?
No. Fill the water tank with suitable water only. Do not add laundry perfume, scented ironing water, essential oil, detergent, or other cleaning products. These can damage the clothes steamer's internal system.
Why has my clothes steamer suddenly stopped producing steam?
First check that the tank is filled and fully inserted, that there is no gap between the tank and the steamer, and that the appliance has fully heated up. If the steamer still isn't working properly, mineral buildup may be one possible cause. Follow the steps in this guide or contact STEAMRS.
My clothes steamer still isn't working after descaling. What should I do?
Don't repeat the treatment endlessly. If your clothes steamer still isn't working normally after checking it, descaling, and rinsing it thoroughly, contact our customer service team. If possible, include your order number and a short video showing the problem.
